Abstract:
The natural killer cell activity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 28 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus was measured using enzyme-release assay. The patients exhibited obviously decreased natural killer cell activity compared with the healthy subjects in the control group. The natural killer cell dysfunction was related to steroidal therapy, but not to three auto-antibodies. The release of a soluble natural killer cytotoxic factor by the peripheral blood mononuclear cells was tested by cytotoxicity assay induced in K562 cells. This release was significantly lower in the test group than in the control group. Pre-incubation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells withAstragalus membranaceus andTripterygium hypoglaucum considerably enhanced natural killer cytotoxicity by stimulating the release of soluble cytotoxic factors.
