| This paper reviews the data of the clinical pharmacological and phytochemical studies of Alisma plantago L. (泽泻)in disturbed lipid metabolism.It was reported that after Alisma administration the serum lipid levels of patients with hypertriglyceridemia,hypercholesterolemia and hyperbetalipoproteinemia decreased by 14.13—26.6%, 9.0—16.86% and 27.0% respectively,and the serum decreased HDL—CH level was elevated.In animal experiments,Alisma had an inhibitory action on aortic atheroselerosis and fatty liver besides lowering the serum lipid concentration.In laboratory or/and clinical practice a certain action on antihypertension,anti-myocardial isehemia and a mild hypoglycemic effect after administration were observed.The lowering of serum lipid levels by Alisma may influence its endogenous metabolism and its absorption from gastro-intestinal tract.The inhibition of experimental atherosclerosis by Alisma may be related to the lowering of serum level of LDL,which has an atherogenic effect,and to the elevating of serum level of HDL,which has a protective effect against atherosclerosis.It was reported that after administration experimental animals suffered some mild lesions on their livers and kidneys,but no significant side effect or toxicity was observed clinically.The effective parts of Allsma chiefly consist in its lipid soluble components.In 1968,five new triterpenes were isolated from the lipid soluble components.Considering that the patients with hyperlipemia,coronary heart disease or essential hypertension,etc. often suffer from insufficiency of Kidney-Yin according to the differentiation of syndromes of TCM,and that Alisma has the effects of reinforcing vital energy and the substance of the body,as described in ancient TCM literatures,the auther is inclined to think that Alisma may be a herb with a Kidney-Yin reinforcing effect.It is supposed that Alisma may turn out to be an important drug for the prevention and treatment of gerontal diseases,such as atherosclerosis. |
