| 95 cases of severe epithelial dysplasia of esophagus confirmed by cytopathology in the survey of esophageal carcinoma were studied. Patients were devided into three groups,namely,group A:40 patients treated with Bergemia purpurascens,a traditional herb,for six months;group B:24 patients treated with Shah Song Drink(SSD, mixture of Sophora subprostrata,Pinus tabulaeformis,etc.),consisting of three Chinese traditional drugs combined with vitamin A for six months;group C:a control group with 31 patients. Exfoliative cytologic examinations were repeated in all patients six months later.62.5% of the patients in group A,50% in group B and 38.8% in group C showed regression to normal or mild dysplasia.there was a significant difference between group A and C(P<0.05).52.6% of patients of group A,4.5% of group B and 26.7% of group C showed complete disappearance of inflammatory cells.The difference between group A and group B was very significant(P<0.01),and that between group A and Group C was also significant (P<0.05). It seems that the effects of Bergemia purpurascens and those of SSD combined with vitamin A are about the same.But Bergemia purpurascens has better effect in symptomatic improvement and anti- inflammatory action than that of SSD in the treatment of severe epithelial dysplasia of esophagus. |
