| Acute intoxication was orally induced in rats with decoction of the bark derived from the raw roots of Tripterygium wilfordii Hook.f.in single and repeated lethal doses.Pathologic changes in the major organs of all sacrificed or dead rats were studied by light microscopy,electron microscopy and histochemical procedure. Relatively specific and constant pathologic changes following treatment were observed in the lymphoid organs, for example,the lymphocytes of the spleen,thymus and lymphonodi exhibited necrosis characterized by striking pyknosis and karyorrhexis and decrease in number.There were varying degrees of degeneration and necrosis in the parenchymatous cells of the heart,liver and kidney.Congestion,hemorrhage or necrosis were found in the mucous membranes of the gastrointestiual tract. The mechanism of the toxicological pathologicchanges and the relation between clinic and pathology were studied.On the basis of our present data,the decoction seems to possess cytotoxic action that is analogous to immunosuppressive agents. |
