| Sixty-one electro-acupuncture(EA)treating cycles were given to 31 cases suffering from anovulatory menstrual disorders.23 cycles in 17 cases developed biphasic BBT(basal body temperature)within two weeks after the treatment(51.8%)which denoted the occurrence of ovulation.One patient became pregnant during the second treating cycle.Acupoints were Guanyuan(Ren 4),Zhongji (Ren 3),Zigong(Extra 16), and Sanyinjiao(Sp 6).EA was applied 30 minutes daily for 3 days consecutively.BBT,vaginal exfoliative cytological smear and skin temperature on the volar surface of the index finger and the center of palm(ST) were taken before and after EA. The eosinophilic index(EI)of the vaginal exfoliative cells was taken as the criterion,an indication of follicular steroidogenic activity.34 cycles out of the 61 showed their EI were less than 30%.The EI of 21 cases increased after EA and biphasic BBT resulted in 11 of them.A decrease in EI occurred in 13 cycles,of these only one cycle developed a biphasic BBT(P<0.05). ST was elevated after EA in 39 cycles with biphasic BBT in 22 cycles.While in 40 cycles ST decreased after EA,among them,only 10 cycles resulted in biphasic BBT(P<0.01). As a result of the study,it appeared that an adequate endogenous estrogen level associated with an inhibition of sympathetic nerve centre as expressed by the elevation of EI and ST after EA,predisposed to biphasic change in BBT. |
