      The effect of Polygonum multiflorum(PM)for reinforcing Kidney on life-span and lipid metabolism in senile Japanese quails was observed.Results:The time of death in 50% quails were respectively 205,304,322 and 213 days in control,large dosage PM(LDPM),small dosage PM (SDPM)and vitamin E(VE)groups.The average survival time in 50%.dead quails(M±SD,days) were respectively 144.2±56.9 and 175.7±107.1 in LDPM and SDPM groups,which were lengthened remarkably as compared with the control group(89.9±61.9)(P<0.05 and P<0.01).After treatment for 184 days the plasma HDL-C levels in both LDPM and SDPM groups were higher than that in the control(P<0.05 and P<0.01),and in SDPM HDL-C level was higher than that in VE group(P<0.05). At the same time plasma lipid peroxide(LPO)levels in SDPM and VE groups were lower than that in the control group(P<0.05 and P<0.01).After medication for 189 days,plasma HDL-C/TC ratio in LDPM and SDPM groups were higher than that in the control group(P<0.05 and P<0.01),but in contrary,plasma LPO levels in LDPM,SDPM and VE groups were lower than that in the control groups(P<0.01,P<0.001 and P<0.01),and in SDPM group LPO level was lower than that in VE group(P<0.05).The above-mentioned results showed that the drug for reinforcing Kidney PM could lengthen the life-span,raise plasma HDL-C level and HDL-C/TC ratio,and reduce plasma LPO level in senile Japanese quails.These effects of PM are better than that of VE.It suggests that there is certain relationship between the aging process caused by Kidney deficiency and lipid metabolism.
